Essential Information

Cultural Etiquette

When participating in cultural experiences, it's important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Here are some guidelines to help you navigate cultural interactions:

Dress Code

Uganda is generally conservative in dress. When visiting communities, religious sites, or cultural centers, wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. For women, long skirts or pants are recommended, and men should avoid shorts in formal settings.

Greetings and Interactions

Greetings are important in Ugandan culture. A handshake is the common form of greeting, often held for longer than in Western cultures. Learning a few basic greetings in the local language is greatly appreciated. Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially in rural communities.

Gift Giving

If you're visiting a home or community, it's customary to bring a small gift as a token of appreciation. This could be food items, school supplies for children, or practical household goods. Your guide can advise on appropriate gifts for specific communities.
